Prosopagnosia is a type of agnosia. Prosopagnosia was initially described and studied in detail in the by Joachim Bodamer, a German neurologist. The aim of this paper is to examine how the cognitive functions and physiological functions combined bring about a specific behaviour in people. Prosopagnosia is a neuropsychological condition involving the inability to recognize faces of people they know. It is said to be a neurological, because it involves the brain, any damage done to a specific area of the brain impairs the patient from recognizing faces.

Intro Evolution has evolved our brains into complex machines capable of computing the most intricate mathematical equations that compose our universe. Yet this highly functioning and introspective device is often subject to disease and injury. Correctly identifying facial emotion is imperative for the survival of any sentient being and we continually strive to understand how and why some brains are unable to engage this simple mechanism.

Prosopagnosia (face blindness)

What have studies of visual object agnosia and prosopagnosia contributed to our understanding of visual recognition? A lot of what we understand about visual recognition comes from investigating cases where the processes involved go wrong. The absence of a cognitive ability can provide is with the ability to look at where things differ in these individuals from those with normal levels of processing. In the case of visual recognition, we can look at different forms of visual agnosias in order to tell us about how these recognition processes work, as well as whether there are specific brain areas where it occurs. Prosopagnosia is similar, however refers to the deficit in ones ability to recognise faces, including those of very familiar individuals such as spouses, family members and famous celebrities.
