Working within a scholarship of teaching and learning SoTL perspective requires a rigorous approach based on conceptual frameworks in order to build on previous developments. Nevertheless, in health sciences education, the development, implementation, and evaluation of many educational innovations are carried out without an underlying conceptual framework, partly due to a lack of knowledge about any such applicable framework. The objective of this research was to catalogue conceptual frameworks mentioned in recently published health sciences education articles and to classify them according to their use in various SoTL contexts.

Background: Concept-based curriculum CBC is a teaching method that enhances learning by eliminating information overload and memorization; allowing students to think critically by linking knowledge gained in the didactic setting or from previous experiences to apply to clinical practice. CBC is currently implemented in some nursing education programs across the United States. The content-laden curriculum found in traditional nursing education programs, often grounded in the systems approach, has created an environment where faculty are challenged to address current practice competency content while students struggle to gain and retain information. Due to rapid changes in the future labor market, transferable skills are recognized as a vital learning outcome for students in undergraduate higher education. However, ambiguities surrounding the concept and content of transferable skills hamper the actual teaching and learning of transferable skills. Consequently, there is a great need for an overview of the literature on transferable skills to qualify and develop the approaches to transferrable skills in higher education. The study was a mixed studies literature review, which included quantitative, qualitative and mixed-methods studies. A seven-stage sequential exploratory synthesis of the included studies was conducted.
