The orphanage was ran by a very malicious old woman. In the orphanage, lived a boy named Jake, who was 17 years old. Jake had grown up in the orphanage and had no memories of ever living anywhere else. He had helped the old woman for many years; cleaning up the farm, plowing fields and planting crops. Furthermore, if Jake was unable to get all the chores done the old woman would beat him.
This struggle between income and family has put tremendous stress on parents which lead to a higher level of depression which affects the whole family. Some young adult children are forced into the work force before they graduate to help the family. Having this kind of responsibility at such a young age causes some of these young adults to fall into a depression or stressed out with all the responsibility that they start rebelling authority or looking for. Jane had a similar fate as Harry.
